First Step in Getting Closer to God

Life is a battle. Every day we face temptations, challenges, and even the weakness of our own flesh. If we try to fight in our own strength, we will lose. But with God’s power, love, and sound mind, we can overcome (Philippians4:13). The best way to strengthen ourselves for the battles of life is by drawing closer to God.

This article will be the first in a four part series, each on a different aspect of getting closer to God; Prayer, God’s Word, Men and Women of God, and Church.  Lets start with prayer.

How Often Should We Pray?

In Jewish tradition, prayer was offered three times daily—morning, afternoon, and

evening—reflecting both the patriarchs and the Temple sacrifices. Scripture supports this rhythm: “Evening and morning and at noonI will pray, and cry aloud, And He shall hear my voice” (Psalm 55:17,NKJV).

Paul, however, told believers to “pray without ceasing” (1Thessalonians 5:17). This isn’t a contradiction. The set prayer times are dedicated “appointments with God.” Praying unceasingly means living every moment with an awareness of Him, listening for His guidance, and aligning your life with His will.

The Bible doesn’t command us to pray a specific number of times each day—it commands us to pray, and to pray continually. A good rhythm is to have at least two formal prayer times each day—morning and evening—while keeping your heart turned toward God throughout the day.

Morning Prayer – Your Briefing

Start the day by meeting with your Commander. Pray first thing after waking, even with a cup of coffee in hand. Praise Him, thank Him for a new day, and ask that His will be done, paralleling the Lord’s Prayer. Pray for your family, friends, neighbors—and, even your enemies.

Then, picture yourself like a soldier or fighter pilot heading into a mission. In that “briefing room” with God, talk through the day ahead. Ask Him to prepare you for the temptations and challenges you expect—and for the ones you don’t.

Prayer Without Ceasing – Staying Aware

As the day unfolds, follow the steps He has set before you. Check in often: “Lord, how am I doing?” “What should I do differently?” Remember that He is always present, opening and closing doors, guiding your path.

Evening Prayer – Your Debriefing

At day’s end, return to God. Praise Him again, pray for others, and review the day with honesty. Confess where you failed, rejoice where you succeeded, and thank Him for grace and forgiveness. Remember, He loves a repentant heart (Luke 18:9–14).

Morning prayer sets your course. Evening prayer restores your soul. And praying unceasingly keeps you walking closely with God all day long. Build this rhythm, and you will see your relationship with Him grow stronger and deeper.
