What is Your Call?
Your Call Might Not Be To The Pulpit
Many Christians think of “calling” as something that happens only in the church: preaching, teaching Sunday school, ushering, or going on mission trips. But your call is not limited to the pulpit or a church program. Your true calling is tied to the gifts God has given you, and how you use them in His service.
If God has gifted you in accounting and you love that work, then that is part of your calling. The key question is: How do you operate in your gifts as an accountant? The answer is found in Colossians 3:23. “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.” Your workplace is your mission field. This is by design so people of all professions and occupations have access to a disciple of Christ. You are a service representative for Christ, showing His character through excellence, honesty, and love.
Jesus said the greatest commandment is to love God and love your neighbor (Luke 10:29–37). Your “neighbors” include your coworkers, clients, customers, and bosses. By loving them, serving them, and treating them with dignity, you make Christ visible everyday.
The church plays a vital role in this. We gather not simply to “do ministry,” but to be equipped and strengthened for our real-world calling. In worship and fellowship, we receive wisdom, training, and encouragement (2 Timothy 3:16–17; Acts 2:42). Together, we learn to support one another in the struggles of life (2 Corinthians 1:4; Hebrews 10:24). Church is the training ground; the world is the mission field.
This does not mean blending into the world. Scripture calls us to be “in the world but not of it.” Our lives should be marked by Christlike holiness—free of idolatry, greed, vanity, revenge, arrogance, and pride. Instead, we live simply, humbly, and generously. We serve others—even our enemies—when they are in need, showing the world who Jesus is by our actions and testimony (John 13:34–35).
When you combine that character with competence at your work, people will notice. Some will be drawn to Christ because of your example; others will despise you for your obedience (Luke 6:22–23). Either way, your faith will shine.
