Mountains; Physical & Spiritual

Mountains in life can be literal or spiritual. Climbers face physical peaks that tower above the earth; Christians face spiritual challenges that loom just as large. Both require courage, preparation, and faith to overcome. Let’s look at how both mountain climbers and believers conquer the heights before them—and the tools God gives us to do so.

“You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”

John 4:4

Climbing Mountains; Physical and Spiritual

(All verses are from the NKJV)

1. Study the Terrain

Climber’s Method:  Climbers study maps, weather patterns, and the mountain’s structure.

Christian’s Method: Believers study the Word of God to understand their challenge and how to face it.  Knowing God's promises and truth helps us navigate spiritual struggles like fear, addiction, or unforgiveness.

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

Psalm 119:105

2. Use the Right Gear

Climber’s Method:  Ropes, harnesses, ice axes—gear matters.

Christian’s Method: Spiritual gear is found in Ephesians 6—truth, righteousness, faith, salvation, the Word, and prayer.

Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

(Ephesians 6:11)

3. Climb with Others

Climber’s Method: Climbers ascend in teams for safety and support.

Christian’s Method: We need the church—fellow believers who pray with us, counsel us, and encourage us.

“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”

(Galatians 6:2)

4. Take One Step at a Time

Climber’s Method: No one leaps to the summit. Each step matters.

Christian’s Method: Faith is often walked out daily, one obedient step at a time.

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.”

(2 Corinthians 5:7)

5. Trust the Guide

Climber’s Method:  Mountain guides know the safe paths and dangerous pitfalls.

Christian’s Method: The Holy Spirit is our guide, leading us through valleys and over peaks.

“However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth...” (John 16:13)

6. Speak to the Mountain

Climber’s Method:  They don’t speak to the mountain.

Christian’s Method: Unlike climbers, believers are also told to speak to spiritual mountains with faith.

“For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart...he will have whatever he says.”

(Mark 11:23)

7. Don’t Quit at Base Camp

Climber’s Method:  Base camp is not the goal. The summit is.

Christian’s Method: Don’t settle for partial healing, shallow faith, or a halfway walk with God. Keep pressing on.

“I will lift up my eyes to the hills—from whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”

(Psalm 121:1–2)
