Most of us do not live in a world of clear heroes and obvious villains. We live in a contested field — families, workplaces, and communities where brokenness and grace sit next to each other, where the right thing is rarely simple, and where we are asked to show up anyway.
A Contested Field is a Bible study on what faithful presence looks like in that kind of world. It opens with a reflection on the television show Firefly — a story about imperfect people trying to do some good in a morally complicated place — and moves from there into what Scripture actually says about the world we have been sent into. Drawing on Matthew 13, John 17, 1 Corinthians 1, 2 Corinthians 4, and Romans 12, the study works through five teaching points:
The world is a contested field, and that is not a surprise to God.
God uses imperfect people, including you.
The calling is faithful presence, not escape.
Being an instrument means being directed, not self-directed.
The presence you bring into the field is a choice, formed long before the moment of pressure.
This study is written as an on-ramp. It is a good starting point for groups that include new believers or seekers, because it begins with a story rather than a doctrinal argument. It is equally well-suited to small groups, one-on-one discipleship, Sunday school classes, and personal devotion.
What is included
Opening story and personal reflection
Five teaching points grounded in Scripture (NKJV)
A leader note for group discussion
Reflection and discussion questions for each teaching point
