3 Steps to Successful Repentance
To repent is to change. It involves examining ourselves daily, recognizing our sin and taking the steps to change to a more sin free life. We must believe that, with Jesus, we can do it. (All Bible verses are from the NKJV)
Here are Three Steps for Successful Repentance
1. Recognition of Sin
Repentance begins with honest self-examination and acknowledgment of sin.
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us. 1 John 1:9
Against You, You only, have I sinned, And done this evil in Your sight… Psalm 51:4
2. Godly Sorrow (Not Just Regret)
True repentance involves sorrow over offending God, not just consequences and requires a heart that wants to turn from sin toward Jesus.
For Godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death. 2 Corinthians 7:10
Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord… Acts 3:19
3. Belief in Jesus’s power to Forgive and Transform
Repentance is not just about what you’ve done, but about who God is and what He can do.
I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. Ezekiel 36:26
True repentance requires an ongoing commitment to change in order to achieve a changed life and not just a temporary feeling.
There are no shortcuts. Changing the way we think is one of the most difficult things we can do but the rewards of doing so are invaluable. We at S&S Pastoral Services can help you create and follow a plan designed specifically for you. One that gives you the best chance of success.
